Jawaharlal Nehru (1889–1964): The First Prime Minister of India and a Key Figure in India’s Independence Movement

Jawaharlal Nehru, popularly known as “Pandit Nehru,” was one of the most prominent and influential leaders in India’s struggle for independence from British rule. Born in Allahabad on November 14, 1889, Nehru was the eldest son of a wealthy barrister, Motilal Nehru, and his wife, Swaroop Rani. The Nehru family was a leading political and social force in colonial India, and Jawaharlal grew up surrounded by influential figures in Indian society.

Nehru received his early education at home from private tutors and later attended Harrow, an exclusive boarding school in England. He went on to study at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he earned a degree in natural sciences. After returning to India in 1912, he joined the legal profession but soon became involved in the Indian National Congress, which was at the forefront of the independence movement.

Nehru was deeply committed to the cause of Indian independence and quickly rose through the ranks of the Congress Party. In 1929, he was elected as the party’s president, and he played a key role in drafting the historic “Purna Swaraj” resolution, which declared complete independence from British rule.

Nehru was also a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi, and he adopted Gandhi’s philosophy of nonviolent resistance as a means of achieving political change. He participated in many of the nonviolent protests and civil disobedience campaigns organized by Gandhi, and he was jailed several times for his involvement in the independence movement.

In 1947, after years of struggle and negotiation, India finally achieved independence from British rule. Nehru was appointed as the first prime minister of independent India, a position he held until his death in 1964. During his tenure as prime minister, Nehru implemented a range of policies aimed at modernizing and developing India’s economy and society. He introduced land reforms, promoted industrialization, and invested heavily in education and healthcare.

Nehru was also known for his progressive policies and his commitment to social justice. He championed the cause of women’s rights and worked to eliminate discrimination based on caste, class, and religion. He also implemented a range of economic policies aimed at improving the lives of the poorest Indians.

Despite his many accomplishments, Nehru was not without his critics. Some have accused him of being too idealistic, while others have criticized his handling of the Kashmir issue and his policies toward China.

Nevertheless, Nehru remains a revered figure in Indian history and politics. His legacy continues to influence Indian society and politics, and he is often referred to as the “architect of modern India.”
